I was working on my laptop at Berkeley Central Library when, during a break, I wondered: Are there any books about model trains? I checked the catalog, and to my surprise, the answer was yes!
I made my way to the section on model trains. There were a few books about Lionel, as well as some books about train layouts that, as I remember, were perhaps already a little outdated.
One book, however, caught my attention more than the others: Playing with Trains: A Passion Beyond Scale by Sam Posey. I had never heard of Sam Posey before, but as I flipped through the pages, I knew this was a book I needed to read.
It was a great read! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys model trains, especially North American railroads. The book has several sections that offer a fascinating overview of the history and business of model railroading.
I wasn’t surprised that the author emphasized the importance of community and friendship in this hobby. He also explores how beneficial it can be for relaxing the mind.
My rating: 5/5
